This story is written by Louis Fisher. The story is based on a true event of protest led by Mahatma Gandhi in Champaran, Bihar. He wrote many pieces of text on the life of Mahatma Gandhi.

In December 1916, Gandhiji attended the annual convention of the Indian National Congress. Many people followed Gandhiji. A young man named Rajkumar Shukla also visited there. He was a peasant from Champaran, who had come to request Gandhiji to visit Champaran and solve their problem. He met with Gandhiji and described everything. The problem was related to the poor peasants of Champaran and other parts of Bihar. As the soil of Bihar was good for growing Indigo, so the farmers of the region were forced to grow Indigo by British administrative as well as those Indian landlords. And the worst thing was that they had to pay 85% of their total crop to those wicked British administrative and cunning Indian Landlords as tax and rent. Peasants didn't want to grow Indigo anymore as 85%, which is almost the full portion of their total crop were forcefully captured. But they were bounded in a long term bond.

Gandhiji
, after hearing all these stuff, assured Rajkumar Shukla that he will go to Bihar someday. Afterward, Gandhiji was followed everywhere by Shukla. At last, Gandhiji came to Patna with Shukla on the train. Gandhiji and Shukla went to Rajendra Prashad who was a lawyer at that time. But he was not in the town. And Rajendra Prashad's servents thought that Gandhiji was a peasant so they didn't treat him well.

Afterward, Gandhiji went to Muzaffarpur and met professor J B Kriplani. He stayed there to collect information as much as he could. His arrival's news spread like a forest fire. Peasants and lawyers crowded up to hear Gandhiji. Lawyers used to collect huge amounts of fees from sharecroppers, thus Gandhiji chided those lawyers. Gandhiji looked keenly at the problem and then concluded that the major problem was that extreme Law-fear in the mind of those poor uneducated sharecroppers.

Finally, Gandhiji went to Champaran. He met secretary of the British landlords association to collect the information but he refused to give information to any outsider. The commissioner of Tirhut told Gandhiji to leave Tirhut.

Gandhiji went to Motihari, police commissioner stopped him with a legal notice. Gandhiji refused to obey it. So he was summoned for the court the next day. He messaged Rajendra Prashad the full report and instructions.

The next day, thousands of people gathered near the court for Gandhiji, and the authority became powerless. The magistrate dismissed the court for two hours. Gandhiji didn't ask for any bail. And that helpless court had to release Gandhiji without any bail and announced to declare the statement after several days. Till then Gandhiji was on full liberty.

After that thousands of sharecroppers and lawyers met together to follow the instruction of Gandhiji. They collected evidence against big planters. Finally, Gandhiji asked only 50% of their hard work. But they decided to refund 25%. And the agreement was done.

As per Gandhiji, money was not important. The fear which was in the mind of peasants came out, which was the best part. And also, landlords were forced to give up their fake prestige. And peasants came to know about their rights and law. Within a few years, the cultivation of Indigo almost disappeared, as the British didn't have any rights on the land of the peasants, and they can't force them.

Then, Gandhiji looked toward the poor culture and backwardness of that area. He prepared a team for it. Many people joined him, his disciples as well as their wives joined Gandhiji. Few primary schools were opened for children.

And the worst problem was their health condition, hence medicines like Castor oil, Quinine, and Sulfur ointment were distributed among villagers. Clothes were also distributed to the needy.

Thus the Champaran episode played a major role in Gandhiji glory. Peasants were free to grow, whatever they want. Children started getting an education. The health condition was also upgrading. And the most important thing was that the peasants were now Self-confident.

Indigo Summary Class 12  Flamingo English in Hindi |
